Aldous Huxley’s novel, Brave New World, is the fictitious story of a civilization that became obsessed with progress, but had their sights set on a less than ideal mark.  This society was distracted from the true purpose of learning, to increase in freedom and power like Jesus Christ.  This artifact acts as a reminder that counterfeits for learning exist, and that all types of learning are not created equally.  Civilizations should be careful to remember what is most important, and avoid the trap of secular philosophy.

Martin Luther’s 95 Theses is a powerful example of how learning requires the courage to run counter to the norm.  Individuals and societies have a tendency to impose artificial limits and boundaries to the possibilities learning and understanding.  The 95 Theses serve as a reminder that sometimes what is normal is not true or right.  Great learners may sometimes be required to break the mold of tradition.  Learning is an act of courage.

Nationality: English
Creator: Isaac Newton

Newton advanced the design and ability of the telescope, increasing his ability to see beyond our world.  He did not let the sky impose a cap on his potential to learn.  This artifact will remind those who see it that there is more to see than what is immediately apparent.  There is more to learn than just what is available in one’s family, neighborhood, city, nation, and world.  This artifact will encourage people to look past the apparent, and seek out what may have never been seen before.  These things will increase learning.

The Chronicles of Narnia series is a powerful example of learning because it takes a complex and lofty subject and makes it understandable for children.  This illustrates the creative step of Bloom’s Taxonomy of Learning.  It can be a temptation for any individual or society to become prideful when great strides are taken in learning as is evidenced by the uncommon vernacular of academia.  This artifact reminds its viewers that true learning is not about prestige, and should result in power to teach more effectively.  It also focuses on the prominent and eternal truth that learning is rooted in the life of Jesus Christ and His gospel.

Lord of the Rings

Like The Chronicles of NarniaThe Lord of the Rings shares common elements of themes and focus on eternal gospel truths.  This artifact, however, contains a depth of detail somewhat greater than the previous artifact.  It serves as a tool to be examined, studied, and analyzed, leading the viewer to diligently work in order to comprehend its underlying messages.  It stresses the activeness that is required to learn, not only by the study required to comprehend it, but also the message of exertion and triumph contained in the books.  In this way, it is like a two-edged sword of learning.

Number 1
Date: 1948
Nationality: American
Creator: Jackson Pollock
Medium: Paint

http://www.terraingallery.org/Pollock_LS.htm

Number 1 is a modern, individualistic, splatter painting that is a powerful tool to teach a civilization about learning.  By studying and analyzing previous artifacts for meaning, there is a danger of begging to look beyond the actual reality and truth that is present.  Presenting this artifact to a civilization would prompt them to analyze and seek out meaning where their might not be.  This exercise could help teach a civilization of learners that not everything has a hidden meaning, and it is ok to take some things at face value.  This contrasts previous principles of learning that have been discussed.  An effective learner must know that there is not one rule that always applies, but personal discretion is essential for a lifetime of impactful learning.
